Back Story on "Sounds of Centre"

“I Know You're Still Here for Christmas” was written over 20 years ago when I lived in York, Pa.

When my Dad passed in 1996, my wife Debi and I purchased an picture ornament and placed my Dad's picture in it and placed it on the tree.  Over the years we continued to do the same thing with others that had passed on.  So one year while decorating the tree, the song concept came to me because I had realized that I would say things that my Dad said, Music that me and my brother had recorded together was there for me to listen to , and I had vivid memories or items from friends and loved ones that kept them in my thoughts.

Christmas is a time for reflection with me, and I remember early on  thinking about others who had less at the Holidays. By no means were we rich, but we had a nice home, two great sons, a roof, food, etc. We struggled, but we were doing ok. When I was younger it was not always the case, so I could be reflective of not having the things needed or not having or receiving what others received.

This year locally we lost a few great people in town, Musician - Tony Merz, Music Lover and Video Guy - Dale Kinney, and about a year ago Party Marty - local Icon. It made me think that after all this time of that song being in a folder, it was time to release it.

While having a glass of wine one night, maybe two …. I called Je Spence (local studio owner - North Florida Recordings) and the rest is history. I told him what I wanted to do, and right away he said you should do this. “No seriously you should should do this”  We talked more one afternoon and came together with a mission to get the song released by Thanksgiving day. I started contacting people who I thought were well respected and that also had great talent. When you have a large community of music, this is not easy and hopefully I did not upset anyone, but there are only so many spots on a song. So I went with my gut.

And while there were others that I wanted to join us, sometimes things don't work out for various reasons, but as Amy Vickery said to me at a playback, "sometimes things happen for a reason. This song came out great and it was meant to be!"

After a couple weeks of trying to organize, we changed up the lineup on Thursday the 13th., and Monday the 17th. -  myself - Drums, Phil Maphey - Bass, and Vic Deacon-Guitar knocked out the Rhythm section pretty quickly and it all started to take shape. Followed by a session with Jim Geiger - Piano who had played with Tony Merz for 8 years and I felt like he really needed to be a part of this song.  Finally Shawn Pfaffman gave us some colorful Hammond organ.

The vocals were recorded the following Sunday the 23rd. which seemed like a non-stop in and out revolving door of lead and guest vocalists.  Je was a little challenged but knocked it out for sure! You see, he did not realize I had as many folks coming as we did.

And somehow, with the additional stress added to Je's plate, we were done for a Thanksgiving day release.

The Name - Joe Senger's “Sounds of Centre” - came from the thought that I did not want it to be me, featuring …… , but I wanted it to be a community project. So It came to me pretty quickly because of playing so many "Sounds on Centre" events, and Sounds on Centre is such a community event, what if I altered it slightly to Sounds of  Centre - You can also take in the fact that with such a strong political climate, we brought people together from various parties who may have various opinions on many topics but that was not what it was about, and doesn't have to be… and I like that as well, so it became      Joe Senger's “Sounds of Centre”  we need more togetherness again! We are the USA!

I am truly thankful for everyone that has donated time and talent to this song, and I hope it lives on forever.  I know it will, we will keep bringing it back for you all to enjoy.

Special shout outs to Je for putting up with me, not that I am bad in the studio but when you have a vision , you have one. Also Amy for helping us with Vocals, paving the scratch track which helped guide us, and adding help with others with harmonies and hitting those ad-libs at the end! Last but not least Kristi Bennett for sponsoring us which helped with the cost of recording. Please review her info below and support her business if you can.
